Health & Fitness Miracles: Do They Exist?

Are There Health And Fitness Miracles?

How many times have you flipped through a magazine and seen the latest and greatest miracle weight loss supplement or methodology? It’s another one of those health and fitness miracles I suppose. Remember all the late night infomercials that promised unparalleled weight loss and muscle tone and it can be yours for just 4 easy installments of only $19.95? Hurry because if you act now, we’ll also throw in a miracle juicing blender capable of reducing solid steel to liquid in seconds…Yes indeed. Yet another one of those health and fitness miracles that only a fool would pass up.

It still persists on every level and now on television, for example, we have Dr. Oz pitching miracle weight loss supplements that don’t work and never once have been proven to. That has never stopped him from proclaiming any one of them as health and fitness miracles.

If fitness and health were that easy, Dr. Atkins of the infamous Atkins diet, wouldn’t have died an obese man. Nothing worth having is that easy. No pills or injections will change that. The bottom line is that if you have a fitness goal, you’re going to have to work your tail off to achieve it. Furthermore, it won’t be attained by next week, no matter what form of snake oil you just purchased. Changes to the composition of one’s body takes a lot of work, a lot of effort, a lot of sacrifice, and also a lot of time. Bottom line, there are no health and fitness miracles. Just hard work and dedication that yields results over time.

One thing I hear a lot as an Austin personal trainer, is how a new client wants to look like so and so. I try to explain that physiques aren’t haircuts where you can take a magazine to the salon/barbershop and have them cut your hair just as it appears in the photo. Fitness and physiques are very much dictated by our genetics. If you have small calves, for example, you will be able to make improvements on them over time, but you’ll never overhear someone saying about you that your calves look like a couple of hams. Muscle insertion points are genetically dictated and can’t be modified with different techniques or supplements as is the same with bone structures and metabolic rates. Just like the rest of us, you are who you are. It’s up to you to make the improvements and be the best you possible.
