Being Ready To Workout: It’s Not Just Physical

Are You Really Ready To Workout?

The other day, a long time personal training client of mine said to me that his wife, whom I have known for many years, was interested in returning to the gym at some point. She was ready to workout he said, but had to get ready first. Naturally, I wondered how long it takes this lady to get ready for something, as her time frame was somewhere in the ballpark of 1 month to meet her goals. When I called her, she explained that she wanted to lose weight first in order to be ready to come to the gym to lose some weight. Sound crazy? It’s not, and furthermore, it’s not as uncommon as you might expect.

In previous writings, I’ve addressed the body image issues that plague us all, to some degree or another. As I’ve written, we all suffer to some degree with that issue. In this case, my client’s wife was concerned not only about looking her best before rejoining the gym, but getting stronger and more flexible as well. She had a vision in her head of a scenario where in she was super slim, super strong, and endlessly vigorous, thus allowing me to take her to a level she’s never before been. She was there mentally, but physically, she wasn’t ready to workout simply based upon the reflection she saw in the mirror.

While she’s far from being ridiculous, her plan was a little off base and unrealistic. Getting in shape before you come see a trainer to get in shape is akin to cleaning the house like crazy right before the maid comes. A lot of people do it, but it doesn’t really make a lot of sense when you think about it. The maid is there for a reason and so is your trainer. Let them do their job and get you the results you are looking for. If you are ready to workout, then take the plunge and do it.

Oftentimes, it’s harmless enough when people do this, but the downside is when they go on radical or fringe diets, or supplements, in order to lose weight quickly. There’s a flip side to everything, and diets and supplementation are not exceptions. There’s a rebound effect that’s likely to occur when the diet is not done properly, or the supplements aren’t safe and natural. In this case, they have gotten themselves behind the eight ball and had they simply arrived to the trainer in the first place with a bunch of determination, ready to workout, they’d be further along much sooner, and have a weight loss regimen that was not only successful, but one that is also maintainable for the long run.
