Workout Myths: 1 Minute Full Exercise = 45 Minutes of Moderate Exercise?

More Workout Myths

As a longtime personal trainer in Austin, I’ve pointed out repeatedly over the years on this blog, as well as in my gym to my clients, that there is an overabundance of misleading information, and simply out and out falsities circulating within the health and fitness world. Maximum heart rate calculation formulas, cleanses, anti carbohydrate diets, juices in place of traditional foods, and now, the latest and perhaps even the greatest of workout myths has surfaced. One minute of full on exercise may be just as beneficial as 45 minutes of moderate exercise is what some people are saying.

As with all workout myths, you simply have to use a combination of science, rational thought processing, as well as a bit of common sense to realize that a lot of fitness statements and breakthroughs, are nothing more than fitness myths. Rational thought prevails in this case, as does common sense, but it’s not an open and shut case, however.

If this new discovery is a ground breaking reality, as opposed to just another statement tucked into the workout myths folder and stashed away, then an awful lot of people are wasting a lot of time in the gym, on the running track, on the bicycles, in the pool, etc.

Common sense dictates that this claim that 1 minute of hard exercising can equal 45 minutes of moderate levels of exercise, is simply absurd. Unless, however, you spend 45 minutes playing with your phone, reading a book, talking with your friends, etc in the gym. Naturally 1 minute of exercise would trump that. For that matter, even 20 seconds would, by that logic. Common sense also dictates that if you are doing sport specific exercising, more time is always better than less. Weight loss can’t happen in 1 minute, just as abs aren’t developed in 5 minutes despite the huge marketing blitz for 5 minute abs a while back.

The most intelligent way to ensure that you are getting good results from your workouts, is to make sure to maximize your time in the gym, use proper techniques with the exercises themselves, eat properly for your body, as well as your goal, and of course, to actually be sure to do all of the aforementioned things consistently and regularly. Whether you only have a few minutes to spare that day for your workout, it’s vital that you at least put that amount of time into it. Results only come from hard work and consistency, and as for anything that’s a difficult undertaking, I would suggest spending more than a minute per day on it if you plan on taking it seriously. I think we can safely classify this new breakthrough, as it’s being touted, as yet another one of those sensationalistic workout myths.
