Proper Gym Techniques

Proper Gym Techniques For YOUR Body

The other day, a young man came into my gym for his usual work out. He is not a man of enormous physical stature, or strength, but rather one with a slight build and a shy personality. In fact, he will barely make eye contact when you greet him as he comes through the door.

I noticed as he was doing his deadlifts, that his form was very good, and I told him so, in order to give him some positive affirmation, as well as to break the ice a little bit, so to speak. He seemed genuinely happy to hear my praise of his proper gym techniques, but told me that he knew he was going to do it correctly, because he went on a website and other members of the site told him how to do the exercise. Fast forward 10 minutes, and this same young man is at the squat rack doing overhead presses, and very incorrectly. The internet, obviously, had failed him.

As a long time personal trainer, I make my living by teaching people many things, including proper techniques for their body. Not every body, but their body. This is why its called personal training. Simply put, it’s personal as opposed to impersonal we would generate sweeping statements that could benefit some, but not all. That to me, is worthless, especially if you are paying for it.

There are general guidelines on proper gym techniques that cover how to perform any exercise. How you need to perform the exercise based on what, if any, tightness and imbalances, you have in the area that will be targeted, or used as a stabilizing muscle, is obviously, a very individual thing. Nobody on the other side of a computer can help you with that. That, is something that needs to be face to face, is obviously, a very individual thing. Nobody on the other side of a computer can help you with that. That, is something that needs to be face to face, and whomever is looking at, and advising you, needs to have a fully working knowledge and anatomical understanding.

The internet can be very informative, entertaining, beautiful at times. Unfortunately, even with the best of intentions, it can also be misleading, and downright false with its facts.

If you have doubts and wonder if you’re employing proper gym techniques, have questions about nutrition, etc, seek out a qualified personal trainer for answers.
